If Madagascar had a big music festival where all the best artists performed, how would that look like? That is what went through my mind when I started this project. Although I might not be able to organize such a big event for now, I can start by envisioning it. One Vazo (meaning one music) is a ficitional music festival in Madagascar that happens in a weekend every year. It promotes Malagasy and African music, new rising artists, and also the city hosting it.
Design Process
1. Brainstorm. One Vazo embodies unity through music, blending warmth with rustic and cultural elements while maintaining a modern feel. Warm images against a blue backdrop provide a vibrant contrast. Collages bring a rustic touch, the color palette evokes cultural richness, and modern textures and patterns add contemporary flair.
2. Assets Design. I sourced assets like a sky photo and designed a logo that embodies accessibility and unity by interlinking letters. Brand guidelines were established to maintain consistency with typeface and patterns.
3. Poster. Since the poster serves as an initial interaction with One Vazo, I opted to feature familiar elements: the artists. A collage of prominent artists' portraits was chosen. Given Mahajanga's reputation for the world's largest baobab, the background naturally showcases this iconic tree.
4. Billboard. To ensure consistency with the poster, the billboard serves as an extended version, featuring additional artists. It focuses on essential details for a quick glance: the date, location, and a Madagascar icon representing One Vazo's essence.
5. Shirt. For festival merchandise, the spotlight is on the iconic "Cirque Rouge" landscape of Mahajanga. Topographic doodles accentuate its unique features, divided into modern sections for a clean look. "MJN", short for Mahajanga, and postal code 401 add a final touch.
6. Booklet. The festival booklet serves as a navigation tool, containing essential information like schedules, artist lineups, and a QR code for area maps. It also lists festival services, important phone numbers, emergency contacts, local recommendations, and advertisements. Designed to be clear and portable, it features images highlighting famous Mahajanga landmarks and their unique attributes, maintaining the branding of One Vazo.
